Phase One: Agentic BI, Live in Cognos, Coming to QuickStart
IBM’s latest release, Cognos Analytics 12.1.3, introduces what they’re calling “agentic BI.” The name matters because it signals a real shift. Instead of asking you to learn a tool, the system learns what you’re asking and builds the answer. Five capabilities define this shift.
Data Query Agent (Preview): You ask a question in plain language. The system returns an answer grounded in your actual business data, not a generic model guessing at what your numbers might mean. “How much of our revenue last month came from orders over $50K?” gets answered with precision.
Report Authoring Agent: Describe a report you need. The system builds it, formats it, and hands it over. The analyst approves or refines. No more starting from scratch.
Governed AI workflows: This is the part that makes agentic BI real for finance and operations teams. Every agent interaction respects your existing roles, permissions, and audit requirements. Speed doesn’t mean sacrifice control.
Integration into tools you already use: Cognos now shows up inside Watson Orchestrate, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, or custom applications your team already has open. No more context-switching between tools to move an answer from a report into an email or a decision meeting.
Bring Your Own LLM: Organizations can now connect their own AI model, self-hosted or cloud-based, into the Cognos agentic framework. For teams in regulated industries (finance, healthcare, pharma), that flexibility isn’t optional. It’s foundational.
These capabilities exist and work today inside IBM’s cloud version of Cognos Analytics. We’re building the path to bring them into the QuickStart Solution, rolling out in stages, starting with the features that deliver value fastest.
Phase Two: A Larger Footprint, Powered by WatsonX
This is a bigger shift. Instead of agentic capabilities living inside the reporting layer alone, they extend across the full analytics lifecycle.
- Metric building gets smarter.
Rather than an analyst manually constructing every metric from zero, the system generates trusted metrics directly from real question-and-answer patterns. The analyst reviews and approves. Faster, but not automated away. - Business users get to harder questions.
Questions that used to require pulling data from three reports and doing the math yourself—”What’s our margin trend by product line versus forecast?”—become single conversational requests the system handles. - “Why” starts to matter as much as “what.”
Diagnostic capabilities aim to move beyond reporting what happened toward explaining why it happened. Driver analysis becomes automatic, not manual. - The system gets smarter over time.
Feedback from business users and analysts feeds back into the platform, closing the gap between what people ask for and what the system delivers.
These are Phase Two capabilities. Not available yet. But the direction is clear, and it builds directly on the governed foundation IBM just released.
What This Means If You’re Running QuickStart
You don’t need to do anything right now, and that’s the point. QuickStart already runs on IBM Cognos Analytics and Planning Analytics, so as IBM extends that foundation with agentic capabilities, you’re not starting over. You’re building on infrastructure you’ve already invested in.
Phase One is proven and working today in IBM’s cloud version of Cognos Analytics, and we’re building the path to bring it into QuickStart, rolling out in stages. Phase Two is where we’re taking QuickStart after that. We’ll have more to share as both roadmaps firm up.
