I recently attended two IBM sessions covering the Cognos Analytics 12.1.2 release: the official April product update and a deeper technical dive into the new Agentic AI capabilities. Together, they paint a compelling picture of where the platform is heading, with some practical deployment considerations worth understanding upfront.

What’s New in Cognos Analytics 12.1.2
The headline is clear: Cognos is entering the agentic era. IBM is building AI directly into the platform rather than layering it on from the outside, and the 12.1.2 release is where that shift becomes real.
Four AI Agents, Now Generally Available
This release ships four AI agents that fundamentally change how users interact with reports and dashboards.
The Search Agent lets you find any report or dashboard using plain-language queries like “Q4 Revenue by Region.” No folder navigation required. The Summary Agent automatically generates an executive-level summary of any report, surfacing key metrics, trends, and anomalies without any manual work. The Share Agent lets you distribute content via email or Slack using a simple natural-language command like “send this to my manager.” And the Authoring Agent, currently in public review, can create crosstab reports from natural language descriptions. It’s early stage, but the direction is clear.
What makes this meaningful for our clients is that these agents work within Cognos’s existing security model. Unlike bolt-on AI tools, they respect your existing roles, permissions, and data governance. That’s a critical distinction for regulated industries.
Authoring and Dashboard Enhancements
Beyond the AI agents, 12.1.2 delivers a number of practical improvements that make everyday use of Cognos smoother for all users.
Filtering is faster and more intuitive. Dashboards look cleaner, with better spacing and visual clarity right out of the box. When you click on one chart or table, related visuals on the same dashboard now update automatically, which makes exploring your data much easier. You can also copy numbers and text from reports the same way you would in any browser, with no extra steps. And automated alerts can now be configured across a broader range of data sources, giving your team more ways to stay informed.
The 2026 Roadmap
IBM also confirmed a move to quarterly on-premise releases, with a strong pipeline of AI capabilities on the way. In Q2 2026, expect a new Q&A Agent that lets users ask questions directly against their models and reports, along with a Report Authoring Agent and a Modeling Agent. Further down the road, IBM is planning enhanced LLM support, multilingual capabilities, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) server support for embedding Cognos into broader AI workflows. Longer term, deeper integration with tools like Microsoft Office, GitHub, and enterprise communication platforms is also on the roadmap.

For customers running QuickStart for SAP B1, the path forward is straightforward. Your current analytics and reporting capabilities deliver full value today, and the new AI agents in 12.1.2 are a natural next step when you’re ready for them.
