With an average cost of $5,600 a minute, your data center going down for just 90 minutes could cost more than half a million dollars.
Industry research from Emerson Network Power’s report, entitled “Understanding the Cost of Data Center Downtime: An Analysis of the Financial Impact of Infrastructure Vulnerability,” based on a recent Ponemon Institute study (2011), “Calculating the Cost of Data Center Outages” showed that, based on cost estimates provided by survey respondents :
o average cost of data center downtime was approximately $5,600 per minute,
o based on average reported incident length of 90 minutes, average cost of a single downtime event was approximately $505,500.
o costs are based on (including but not limited to) : data loss or corruption, productivity losses, equipment damage, root-cause detection and recovery actions, legal and regulatory repercussions, revenue loss and long-term repercussions on reputation and trust among key stakeholders.
